Designing the agentic enterprise

A connected research programme, built hands-on outside the day job, exploring how organisations, software delivery and technology leadership change when intelligent agents become active participants in the enterprise.

Context

Every previous chapter automated friction at one scale and then met the same friction one level up. Agentic AI is the first technology that can operate at all of those levels at once: writing the code, running the pipeline, applying the governance, even proposing the roadmap. That raises a question worth a research programme rather than a hot take.

The constraint

Enterprises cannot adopt agents by bolting a chatbot onto the existing operating model. The constraints are structural: how work is decomposed, how governance is enforced, how cost is controlled, and how human and agent teams share responsibility. Nobody has a proven design yet.

The intervention

I am building the answer empirically, as a connected body of work. Hekton is an agentic software factory: a private lab where fleets of specialised agents research, design, build, review and operate real software, this site included, under governance-as-code, with claims registers, decision logs, risk registers and human approval gates built into the workflow. Gremlins is the agent-first SDLC concept underneath it, exploring tiered autonomy and deterministic review gates. The Agentic Tekton is the public thought-leadership platform where the patterns that survive contact with practice get written up: agentic operating models, invisible governance, AI FinOps, local and cloud model routing, context and dependency graphs, and human-agent team design.

Outcomes

  • This website was researched, designed, built and reviewed inside the Hekton factory, under its governance model.
  • A working multi-project factory with tiered agent autonomy, review panels and human approval gates operating on real production sites.
  • A growing public body of work at The Agentic Tekton connecting agentic delivery to enterprise operating models.

Capability gained

First-hand, current, hands-on knowledge of what agentic delivery actually breaks and what it makes possible. The executive perspective and the practitioner perspective on the same frontier, at the same time.
